Scores from the music and songs composed by Stavros Xarchakos for “COMMEDIA”, the struggle between peasants and kings, a work by Giorgos Skourtis staged at the Open Theatre in December 1973. The piece transports us to the Italian Renaissance and follows the traces of the Commedia dell’arte: an ingenious fusion of traditional musical tones with folk and demotic music, offering at the same time an interpretation of Greek reality.

“The Red Lanterns were, for me, a musical challenge! Thirty years later, they have also become a directorial challenge… But truly, what are the red lanterns of our own era, when the red lights of our traffic signals impose the red warning sign for our prostituted, FALSE life!“ – Stavros Xarchakos

"TO PARTY", THE FIRST THEATRICAL WORK

"When I started writing the music for "To Party," the first thing I thought was that I didn't want to just dress up the play, but to add a third eye to it, for the viewer's imagination, where the text leaves silences. I tried to make my music discreet, not to overshadow the play or the author's intentions, but to serve the drama and its lyrical tone. I am, of course, delighted with the director's wholehearted acceptance." Stavros Xarchakos "To Party" was based on the play of the same name by British writer Jane Arden, which was staged in 1961 at the Poreia Theatre, directed by Alexis Damianos.

EURIPIDES, TROADES (The Trojan Women)

EURIPIDES, TROADES (The Trojan Women)

The pain and misery of the captive Trojan women—whom Euripides presents as a cry against the absurdity of war—find their sonic counterpart in the music of Stavros Xarchakos. Through rhythms that evoke a ritual lament, the composer transforms the women’s tragedy into a symphonic litany that hovers throughout the entire work. Captivity and the moral decay of the victor also find their musical analogue in Xarchakos’ score, where the symphonic dramaturgy reshapes the tragedy into memory and questions who is truly the victor and who the defeated.

KOKKINA TRIANTAFYLLA GIA EMENA (RED ROSES FOR ME) – A PLAY BY SEÁN O’CASEY

Stavros Xarchakos composed the music for the theatrical play "Kokkina Triantafylla Gia Emena", with texts by Pavlos Matesis. The play is based on the eponymous work by Seán O’Casey and represents a significant moment in Greek musical theatre. A characteristic cover from the period is presented, featuring a stylized face design and the reference to the year 1944.
