CONCERTO FOR TWO MANDOLINS, HARPSICHORD, AND STRINGS

An article from "Eleftherotypia" (1978) discusses how well bouzoukia pair with Vivaldi. The article includes a reference to the calasvione, a three-stringed instrument identical to the bouzouki, which was played in Italy during the Middle Ages and up to a century after Vivaldi’s death. As noted, the composers themselves made adaptations of concertos for other instruments.

The lyric poem “Cyrano and Roxane” by Stavros Xarchakos is presented at the Greek National Opera. The work, a co-production with the Imperial Theatre of Compiègne, France, draws its content from the play “Cyrano de Bergerac” (1897) by Edmond Rostand.

In March 1989, Stavros Xarchakos presented works by Ariel Ramirez with Giorgos Dalaras, in the presence of the composer himself, who praised the effort. A recording followed in April, at the Catholic Church of Saint Dionysius. In 1995, at a concert dedicated to the work of ELEPAP, the same piece was chosen once again as the most suitable for conveying messages of love and tenderness, as a gift to the children of ELEPAP.

A rare musical journey into the “secret encounters of the young man from Trikala,” as well as the “painful encounters” in the city of Thessaloniki, toward the magical songs of his first period, the most primal and innocent phase of his life, expressed in such a distinctive musical style as to articulate the “shared language of Music.” Brilliant and original dialogues: great songs by Tsitsanis in conversation with classical creators, music from every corner of the globe, tradition, and contemporary musical idioms… “I admire, value, and love Tsitsanis’s work in its entirety. Yet I have always been especially captivated and deeply moved by his first period, up to 1940, that is, the songs he wrote up to the age of 25 […] I began to engage with this period almost instinctively. The performance of Mozart’s "Requiem" with the National Symphony Orchestra of Vilnius took place beneath the cliffs of Meteora on a singular evening, under the artistic direction of Stavros Xarchakos. The "Azouliokas" Youth Choir from Vilnius, the Plovdiv Youth Choir, and the "Branko Krasmanovic" Men's Choir from Belgrade also participated.

“For me, rebetiko songs are songs of vision—of longing for a better life. Yet at the same time, they are the songs of dreams betrayed. They carry within them an eternal nostalgia for beauty; they speak of the sacredness of desire, of that longing which keeps you standing even when everything around you collapses. They are the rebetika of defying terror, the songs that look hardship straight in the eye and do not turn away, but transform it into melody. They are the rebetika that dare to challenge fate, a calm, almost serene confrontation with death itself. And somewhere within all of this, the ‘aman’ that rises like music from the depths of my soul meets the ‘amen’ of a prayer. As if they become one: pain, hope, protest, and acceptance.
